Type your bio line and tap a style to copy it, then paste it into Instagram. Works in the bio, the name field, captions and comments. Note that the username itself cannot be styled โ Instagram restricts it to plain characters.

These are Unicode characters rather than a typeface, so they paste straight into a bio or username. Screen readers cannot read them and search engines cannot index them โ use the image tab when the lettering has to be printed, cut or read aloud.

How to use it
Name, username and bio are three different fields
Instagram treats them differently and it catches people out. The username โ the @handle โ accepts only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no styled text will ever save there. The name field, the bold line above your bio, does accept it. So does the bio itself, and captions and comments. If a paste silently reverts or refuses to save, you are almost certainly in the username field.
Styled characters eat your 150-character bio
The bio caps at 150 characters, and Instagram counts codepoints rather than what you see. Most styles here are one character in, one character out, so nothing changes. The four combining styles are not: strikethrough, underline, overline and slashed append an invisible mark after every letter, roughly doubling the count. A 90-character bio in strikethrough will not fit. Check the counter in the app before you commit to a layout.
Styling your name makes you harder to find
Instagram search matches on the username and the name field. Set your name to ๐๐ฎ๐ต๐ต๐ช and a search for Bella will not surface you, because to the index those are unrelated strings. For a personal account that is a fair trade. For anything where being found by name matters โ a business, a creator building an audience โ keep the name field plain and put the styling in the bio, where nothing depends on it.
Stories and Reels text is a separate thing
The fonts in the Stories editor are real typefaces Instagram renders onto the image, and they are not available to bios. Conversely, pasted Unicode works fine as a Stories text layer but you lose the app's colour, highlight and animation options. If you want lettering on the image itself, the Image tab here gives you a transparent PNG you can drop in as a sticker โ that route also keeps the shape identical on every device.
Questions
- 01
- Type your text above, tap a style to copy it, then in Instagram open Edit profile, tap the Bio field and paste. Save. No app or account is needed โ the styling is carried by the characters themselves.
- 02
- Instagram allows only letters, numbers, periods and underscores in a username, so styled characters are rejected. Use the Name field instead โ it sits directly above the bio, appears in bold on your profile, and does accept them.
- 03
- Yes, on both, and in the web app. Rendering depends on the device having font coverage for those characters; modern iOS and Android both cover the common styles. Very old Android builds may show boxes for the more unusual ones like Circled Solid or Squared Solid.
- 04
- There is no evidence Instagram down-ranks styled text. The real cost is discoverability: search will not match a styled name against its plain spelling, and screen readers cannot read these characters properly. Both are reasons to keep the name field plain and style the bio instead.
- 05
- The bio holds 150 characters and the name field 30. Most styles here are one-for-one so the count is unchanged, but strikethrough, underline, overline and slashed add a combining mark after every letter and roughly double it.
